Arenal Eco Adventure Preview, Day 1: Proyecto ASIS
May 2nd, 2010
The first time Jesse and I arrived at the Proyecto ASIS wild animal rescue center in Quesada, Costa Rica, we knew that it was exactly the kind of place we wanted to bring our students. Alvaro and the rest of the staff at ASIS will help our students learn about the land, wildlife and culture of Costa Rica. From the Proyecto ASIS website…
Proyecto Asis is an organization that offers Spanish classes, Volunteer and Cultural immersion programs in the Arenal area of Costa Rica. We support local, environmental, social and conservations projects within the community.
They were very excited when I told them about the trip we were planning and what our ideas were. Here is their description of the day they have planned for you…
Hiking tour around Proyecto Asis.
Up close and personal each species! Your guide will be talking about each animal history. Most of the species here have been confiscated by MINAE (Ministery of the Environment and Energy). Others have been injured or abandoned. We have been trying to do our best!.After the hike, a coffee break is included and then, your group will have the chance to take some beautiful pictures around the sanctuary.Lunch is included. I just need to know if someone in your group has a special diet (vegetarian, allergic to onion, etc)
After lunch, you will have a time to rest in order to start the volunteer work. It could be an exclusive project for your group (building a cage, repairing an enclosure, etc).Coffee break included in the afternoon.
Alvaro recommends you to arrive as early as possible in order to watch the birds.
The photography objectives for day 1 will be to practice and improve your wildlife photography skills. In addition to the rescue animals, there are MANY birds that make their homes at ASIS. The guides at Proyecto ASIS will help you learn to see the animals in the wild. Finding the animals is often the hardest part of wildlife photography in the rain forest.
Please visit the Proyecto ASIS website for more information.
