Arenal Eco Adventure Preview, Day 2: Arenal Hanging Bridges

May 10th, 2010

Day two of the Arenal Eco Adventure in Costa Rica will find you high above the rain forest canopy at the Arenal Hanging Bridges. This two-mile trail through the rainforest features sixteen bridges (including six suspension bridges), and offers unique views of the jungle canopy, Lake Arenal and the Arenal Volcano. The trail consists of concrete bricks and is well maintained and easy to navigate. Enrique, our naturalist guide, will be on hand to tell you all about the plants and wildlife you are likely to come across.

There will be lots of opportunities to photograph birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Last time we were there we came across a family of coatimundi on the trail. There is an optional bird watching trail in addition to the regular route. The waterfall at the end of the optional waterfall trail is definitely worth the extra hike. The Arenal Hanging Bridges are a great place to practice High Dynamic Range photography, or HDR. The dynamic range between the bright sky and the dark shadows in the forest can be difficult to capture in a single exposure. The instructors can help you pre-visualize your shots with an eye toward post processing. The evening processing session will feature a basic HDR workflow.

The Arenal Hanging Bridges are probably the most “touristy” of the excursions on the Arenal Eco Adventure Photo Workshop, but the scenery and the unique trail are not to be missed. I think you’ll find yourself wishing that all tourist attractions were like this one!
