DPE Atlanta: Success in HOT’lanta

August 21st, 2010

Rick Sammon and I had a great group for the first annual Digital Photo Experience Learing Weekend in Atlanta, GA. We had 22 students from as far away as Chattanooga, TN.

After a delicious welcome dinner on Friday night, we spent Saturday in the classroom. Rick shared experiences, photos and tips until lunch break, then I went through Adobe Lightroom in the afternoon session. We had great door prizes from Nation’s Photo Lab, X-rite, Nik Software and more.

We spent Sunday on location for some hands-on shooting. I arranged 2 beautiful models (thanks Rachael and Becky!) and four locations. The students got to shoot with natural light, reflectors, diffusers, and on and off-camera flash. Some were using modifiers and flash for the first time. You can check out some photos from the event in the DPE flickr group…

We are planing another DPE event in Atlanta next year, but maybe not in the middle of August! Stay tuned for a cooler Atlanta workshop next year.

QUICK TIP:
Don’t be sad if the sky is cloudy when you’re shooting a portrait. The soft light and low contrast on a cloudy day is great for shooting people outside. It also gives you a great natural fill light when using off-camera flash.
