Guest Series: The Power of Community, by Lou Hablas. Part 1

Rob Knight Rick Sammon

In the middle of 2010 I led a weekend photo workshop in Atlanta with my friend Rick Sammon. We had a successful workshop and a great weekend, but it was also the beginning of the Digital Photo Adventures Atlanta photo group.  For me and about twelve other Atlanta area photographers that weekend was the first of many opportunities for teaching, learning and building relationships with some really good folks.

The following is the first installment in a series of posts from one of our founding members, Lou Hablas. Our group hosted an exhibition called “The Power of Community” at the C3 studio last October. We shared a year’s worth of photos and experience and talked about the future of our group. Lou was inspired to begin this series and share his experience with you.  (more…)

News Flash: Great light makes better photos!

Smokey Mountains Olympus E-P3

Sounds simple, right? In this age of higher and higher ISO and cameras that can shoot in the dark I think it’s easy to forget that. My Nikon D3S can shoot in relative darkness with ease and make beautiful files. The Olympus PEN E-P3, not so much. The Oly makes a decent image in lowlight, but it is not the camera’s strong suit for sure. For me this is not all together bad news…

Olympus E-P3 and 12mm f/2.0 lens in the Wild

Olympus E-P3 and 12mm f/2 lens Landscape

I have been spending a lot of time with my new Olympus PEN E-P3 since I got it a couple of weeks ago. In fact, it’s so light that I tend to wear it around my neck most of the time. I figured that the E-P3 would be a good camera for playing around and normal “snap-shots”, but I was dubious about its capability to produce nice, sharp landscape photos. You can read endless “experts” online talk about sensor size, this camera vs that camera, etc… and I do read that stuff. Image quality is definitely important to me, but reading the objective opinion of another photographer can only take you so far. I want to know if I can make the images I want to make with the image quality I expect without spending an hour in front of the computer on each image.

First Impressions: Olympus E-P3

Dick's Creek Falls HDR Georgia

I’ve had my eye on the Micro 4/3 cameras for a while now. When Olympus released the E-P1 a few years ago it was hard to resist to cool retro styling and the promise of “DSLR quality” in a small package. All of the reviews complained about the SLOW auto focus and the less than awesome image quality. So I waited…

Jump ahead to 2011 and Olympus released the third series of their Digital Pen cameras. The E-P3 promised faster (wicked fast) auto focus, new processor, better image quality and still the cool retro style metal body. I couldn’t resist any longer! (more…)

The camera you can take anywhere: Panasonic DMC-TS3

Panasonic DMC-TS3 Arenal Volcano Costa Rica

built in flash for fill light

I have ben searching for a camera like this for a while. My most recent attempt at a “take anywhere” camera was a Nikon P7000. The P7000 can produce great images and it’s compatible with Nikon’s awesome Creative Lighting System. BUT… it’s not exactly a pocket camera (unless you have huge pockets), and I wanted a camera I didn’t have to worry about getting dirty/wet/etc. I purchased a Panasonic DMC-TS3 with high hopes and I had it with me in Costa Rica… (more…)

Lowepro Photo Sport 200 AW and Scope Travel 200 AW in Costa Rica

Lowepro Photo Sport 200 AW Costa Rica

Lowepro Photo Sport 200 AW

Our friends at Lowepro provided me with two of their newest backpacks to take for a spin in Costa Rica. I used the Photo Sport 200 AW backpack/ sling, and I brought a Scope Travel 200 AW backpack for my friend and local guide to try out. Neither one of these packs is your usual photo backpack. In fact, the Scope Travel 200 AW is not really a camera bag at all. It is designed to carry a spotting scope and related accessories.
