News Flash: Great light makes better photos!
Sounds simple, right? In this age of higher and higher ISO and cameras that can shoot in the dark I think it’s easy to forget that. My Nikon D3S can shoot in relative darkness with ease and make beautiful files. The Olympus PEN E-P3, not so much. The Oly makes a decent image in lowlight, [...]
Olympus E-P3 and 12mm f/2.0 lens in the Wild
I have been spending a lot of time with my new Olympus PEN E-P3 since I got it a couple of weeks ago. In fact, it’s so light that I tend to wear it around my neck most of the time. I figured that the E-P3 would be a good camera for playing around and [...]
First Impressions: Olympus E-P3
I’ve had my eye on the Micro 4/3 cameras for a while now. When Olympus released the E-P1 a few years ago it was hard to resist to cool retro styling and the promise of “DSLR quality” in a small package. All of the reviews complained about the SLOW auto focus and the less than [...]
The camera you can take anywhere: Panasonic DMC-TS3
I have ben searching for a camera like this for a while. My most recent attempt at a “take anywhere” camera was a Nikon P7000. The P7000 can produce great images and it’s compatible with Nikon’s awesome Creative Lighting System. BUT… it’s not exactly a pocket camera (unless you have huge pockets), and I wanted [...]
Lowepro Photo Sport 200 AW and Scope Travel 200 AW in Costa Rica
Our friends at Lowepro provided me with two of their newest backpacks to take for a spin in Costa Rica. I used the Photo Sport 200 AW backpack/ sling, and I brought a Scope Travel 200 AW backpack for my friend and local guide to try out. Neither one of these packs is your usual photo [...]
Think Tank Photo Lock It Up Review
If you regularly travel with expensive camera gear, the Lock It Up cable lock from Think Tank Photo may be the best $25 you can spend. It is one of those items that works so well and so easily that you’re left wondering, “why didn’t I think of that?” This post was submitted by Rob [...]

I wanted to take a second and mention the companies that support our workshops. When I was looking for sponsors for the Arenal Eco Adventure photo workshop in Costa Rica, it was important to me to work with people and products that I am proud to recommend and represent.
Photoshop World: Orlando, FL 2010
I spent last week in Orlando, FL for the Photoshop World conference at the Orange County Convention Center. This was my fourth Photoshop World and they just keep getting better. The only difficult thing about attending Photoshop World is deciding which classes to take. I tend to focus on Lightroom and photography classes, and this time was no exception.
Think Tank Photo Airport TakeOff Review
I have an old Samsonite roll-aboard suitcase that I put a padded divider set in to hold camera gear. The wheels are terrible, the handle is rickety and it tips over when it’s loaded. I was preparing to lead a workshop in Costa Rica recently and I figured it was time for a new rolling camera bag.
My experience with Think Tank Photo products made their rolling bags my first choice.
Think Tank Streetwalker Hard Drive Backpack Review.
For Christmas my wife surprised me with a Think Tank backpack. It’s the Streetwalker Hard Drive model. For a long time I’ve wanted a backpack that would hold my gear and my laptop. I always hated having one carry on for my gear and another carry on for my computer. Now I can cram all that in to one bag.
Using the Black Rapid DR-1 Double Strap with Really Right Stuff L-brackets
There was only one reason I didn’t order a Black Rapid DR-1 Double Strap when I fist saw one: there did not seem to be a convenient way to use the DR-1 with a Really Right Stuff L-bracket. Yes, you can attach the fastenR-2 to the RRS bracket, but you have to remove it before you can clamp the bracket onto your tripod. I asked the Black Rapid guys about this at Photoshop World and they didn’t really have any suggestions.
Think Tank Photo Rotation 360º backpack review
I get a lot of questions about my Think Tank Photo Rotation 360º backpack from other photographers. “Is that that crazy backpack that spins around?”, “does that thing really work?”, etc. I also read a “review” recently of the “new” Rotation 360º backpack that was written by someone who apparently used the pack once and wrote their impressions. Based on these factors, and the fact that I’ve used my Rotation 360º pack for two years now, I figured I would write a review of my own.
Think Tank Photo Urban Disguise 30 review
I don’t think I’m the only one that is always in search of the perfect camera bag. I would be embarrassed to tell you how many camera bags I have acquired over the last ten years. The problem is that a bag that is perfect for one situation might be totally annoying and difficult to use in another. I thought I had found the perfect bag last year when I got a Rotation 360 backpack from Think Tank Photo… In the context of a busy city, the Rotation 360 seemed like overkill for size and capacity. The hunt for a “city bag” began…
